The rise of HYROX in Tenerife: from niche to phenomenon (and now it’s got its own competition)

A couple of years back, if you said “HYROX” in the south of Tenerife you’d get some funny looks. Now it’s all anyone talks about at the box, and this September the island hosts its very first competition. Let me tell you why this format has become a global phenomenon, why it fits so well here, and what it means for you if you train in Tenerife.

What is HYROX and why is it suddenly on everyone’s lips?

HYROX is a fitness race that mixes running with functional exercises: 8 kilometres split into 8 stretches of 1 km, and between each run, a station (sled, rower, wall balls, farmers carry…). The beauty of it is that the format is identical in every city in the world, so you can compare your time against anyone’s. It’s basically “the race for everyone who trains”.

From niche to global phenomenon

HYROX was born in Germany in 2017 with a few hundred people at its first event. Today it draws in hundreds of thousands of people every season across dozens of cities all over the world, and it keeps adding new venues. So why has it blown up like this?

  • It’s for everyone. You don’t need to master technical gymnastics movements like in other disciplines. If you can run and you’ve got a bit of strength, you can do a HYROX.
  • It’s measurable. You get a time, and you can always try to beat it. Few things are this addictive.
  • It’s competition without being elite. You compete against yourself and against people at your level, with all the buzz of a real race but without having to be a professional athlete.
  • Community. You train together, you suffer together and you celebrate together. Pure box spirit.

And now it’s coming to Tenerife (for the very first time)

The news that changes everything round here: HYROX is coming to the Canary Islands for the first time, with HYROX Tenerife on the 5th and 6th of September 2026, at the Recinto Ferial in Santa Cruz. This puts the island on the global HYROX map and it means something huge for anyone who trains here: you no longer have to hop on a plane to the mainland to compete. It’s right on your doorstep.

Why does it fit so well in the south of Tenerife?

Because there’s a sporting culture here that just keeps growing: people who train seriously, tourists who look after themselves, great weather to graft all year round and, now, an event of our own. The south in particular is packed with active people —from the surfers of El Médano to the ones running along the beach— and HYROX taps into all of that: it’s tough, it’s measurable and it’s down to earth. The perfect mix.

Feeling the itch? Here’s how to get started

You don’t need to be a machine to get started. If you already do CrossFit or functional training, you’re halfway there. At BlackBOX, in Las Chafiras, we run specific HYROX training sessions with the real stations and coaches who know exactly what this is all about. And if you want to know where to begin, take a look at our 8-week HYROX plan for starting from scratch.

HYROX is no longer a passing fad: it’s a way of training and competing that’s here to stay, and Tenerife has just jumped on board. See you at the box. 🖤
