Let’s talk about something nobody mentions at the box but everyone deals with: that technical tee you pull clean out of the wardrobe, throw on for a session, and ten minutes later it smells like you’ve had it on for a week. If you train seriously, you know exactly what I mean. The good news? It’s fixable, and it nearly all comes down to how you wash the thing. Here’s what we swear by round here.
Why does technical gear stink even after you’ve washed it?
Cotton soaks up water and lets go of odour no bother. Technical fabric (polyester and mates) is built to do the opposite: to not get waterlogged. And that’s the catch — sweat and bacteria cling onto the fibre, and if you don’t shift them properly in the wash, they spring right back to life the second you start sweating again. That’s why the tee smells “fresh” in the wardrobe and like a wet dog by the first WOD.
The mistakes nearly all of us make
- Letting it ferment in your bag. The classic. A zipped-up bag full of sweaty kit is a bacteria farm. Get it out the moment you walk through the door, even if you’re not washing it straight away.
- Washing on a hot cycle. It bakes the smell right in and wrecks the fabric. Wash cold or warm, around 30°.
- Chucking in fabric softener. It leaves a coating that clogs the fibre, traps the odour and kills the breathability. For sportswear, forget it exists.
- Eyeballing the detergent. Too much never rinses out properly and leaves residue for the bacteria to grab onto. Just the right dose, no more, no less.
What actually works
- Wash it inside out. That’s where the sweat is, so the water and detergent go straight at the dirty side.
- The vinegar trick. A splash of white vinegar in the wash neutralises the smell without harming the fabric. And no, your kit doesn’t come out smelling of vinegar.
- Air-dry it. A tumble dryer on full blast murders the elasticity and warps your gear. Hang it in the shade and it’ll last you far longer.
- Don’t let it pile up. The sooner you wash it, the less the smell digs in. Sportswear doesn’t forgive a few extra days in the basket.
Training five days a week? This one’s for you
If you’re in every day — and especially if you’re properly into HYROX or CrossFit — you churn out a mountain of kit and towels. Washing all that the right way, cold, no softener and without letting it stack up, is a faff and eats your time. A workaround a few of us use: hit up a self-service launderette. We swear by Lavandería Azul (which is now opening in La Gran Manzana too): big machines, quick turnaround, and your gear’s done without it swallowing half your afternoon.
Quick recap
- Get your kit out of the bag the second you’re home.
- Inside out, cold water, no fabric softener.
- White vinegar is your mate.
- Air-dry it, don’t tumble it.
- Don’t let it pile up.
Sounds daft, but looking after your gear like this makes it last way longer and saves you reeking like a wet dog round the box. The person next to you will thank you for it. 🖤
