HYROX Comes to Tenerife This September: Everything You Need to Know to Compete

When I found out HYROX was finally bringing a race to Tenerife this September, my first thought was simple: about time. For a while now we’ve watched the island fill up with runners, with people training hard, with athletes chasing something more than endless, pointless cardio. And HYROX fits that crowd perfectly.

The event runs on 5 and 6 September 2026 at the Recinto Ferial in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. If you’ve never seen a HYROX competition live, let me tell you something: there’s no way you’ll walk away without wanting to sign up. Something about the atmosphere, about watching people push the sled with everything they’ve got, just hooks you.

So what exactly is waiting for you on race day?

The HYROX format isn’t complicated, but you have to live it to really get it. It’s 8 kilometres of running, broken into 1 km stretches, with 8 work stations sandwiched in between. Every station is different: you push the sled, drag it, row, hit the ski erg, farmer carry, sandbag lunges, and finish off with 100 wall balls. Same order, every single time, in every city on the planet.

What makes HYROX brutal isn’t any one station on its own. It’s the build-up. By the time you reach the wall balls you’ve already got 7 km of running and 7 stations in your legs. That’s where the race is won or lost, and where months of training make all the difference.

How much time is left to prepare?

Here’s the part that matters. September feels far off, but start counting the weeks and you’ll realise the window closes fast. If you’ve never done HYROX, the bare minimum is around 12 weeks of specific prep. And that means starting now, not in July.

I’ve seen plenty of times what happens when someone shows up without specific training: the first few kilometres feel fine, the ski erg too, but the sled push delivers the first nasty surprise. And by the wall balls there’s nothing left in the legs. It’s no fun for anyone, and it’s a real shame after all the effort of signing up and travelling to the venue.

With a solid base and specific training, the whole story changes. You don’t just finish, you finish strong, with energy left in the last station and already itching to do it again.

How we prepare for it at BlackBOX

We’ve been working with athletes chasing HYROX for a good while now at the box. Prepping someone who’s been doing CrossTraining for years is nothing like prepping someone coming off road running or a regular gym. The starting point is different, so the plan has to be too.

What’s true for everyone, though, is how much it matters to nail the technique on each station before you pile on load and speed. A sled push with bad posture wrecks your lower back. The ski erg at the wrong pace torches your arms inside the first kilometre. These are the little things that decide your race, and you only learn them by training with the real kit.

We’ve got all the official gear at the box: ski erg, sled with track, rowers, sandbags, wall balls. If you want to get ready for HYROX Tenerife 2026, you can do it right here, on the exact machines you’ll meet on race day.

Who’s this for?

For way more people than you’d think. HYROX has categories for every level, including age groups and doubles. I’ve watched people over 50 finish the race with times that would make a lot of younger athletes jealous. This isn’t an elite-only event, it’s a race for anyone who trains seriously and wants to test themselves.

If you’re not sure you’re at the level, the best move is to come down one day, train with us and do an assessment. No strings attached. From there we’ll tell you honestly whether there’s enough time and what work would need doing.

September’s HYROX in Tenerife is an opportunity that doesn’t come around easily. Competing on your own island, with your own people, without ever boarding a plane, that’s worth more than the clock will ever show. If it’s calling you, don’t leave it for tomorrow.
